One fine morning, Ral, Mindy, AJ, and Jing go to play badminton when an evil being appears and kidnaps Mindy. Things seem pretty grim until a mysterious, old man named Lao Pi materializes and offers Ral an enchanted badminton racquet. He explains that the racquet can deflect any attack back at an enemy but cannot do direct damage by itself. Determined to rescue his friend, Ral embarks on a journey which will take him from the clouds in the sky to the depths of Hades.
Navigate through intense, heart pounding traps and obstacles. Fight a crazy cast of characters including a hockey player who thinks he is a god, a lacrosse player running an insane asylum, and a basketball player who turns his trophy into an actual wife. Experience a storyline that pokes fun of sports figures, video games, and pop culture in general. Most importantly, become the greatest warrior of all time... a badminton warrior!
With strong influences from classics such as Mega Man and Castlevania, Badminton Warrior strives to give players that nostalgic feel while providing a unique gaming experience at the same time. In keeping with the retro gaming spirit, the controls are simple, the levels are challenging yet rewarding, and the soundtrack plus sound effects are done in an 8-bit chiptunes style.
• Simple controls (just a swing and a jump button).
• Sports themed stages with a kooky cast of enemies.
• 8 bit style music and sound effects.
• An unapologetic sense of humor.
• 16 levels of game play plus bonus Chinese New Year level.
• Difficult boss battles that are both enjoyable and rewarding.
After working in Los Angeles for twelve years on television shows, I decided to come back to my home town and pursue something more creative. The problem was, I didn't know what that would be at the time. As it happened, a stranger who was teaching children game development at the local hacker space introduced me to Unity. I always had a fascination with video games but never thought I could actually make one until then. Determined to try, I spent the next two years developing my skills and creating the assets for Badminton Warrior. Now that this journey is finally coming to an end, I want to share my work with others and hopefully bring a little sunshine into people's lives.
Being a fan of retro games, my goal is to make things that speak to that inner child who grew up playing the 8 bit classics. I do not want to make knockoffs or clones, however. The renaissance of retro games should not be about remaking old games with new graphics. It should be about experimenting, innovating, and creating unique game play while embodying the elements that made us fall in love with those classics. I made Badminton Warrior with these ideas in mind. It has been an adventure, and I hope to continue on a new one in the future.
